Whenever I see a well, I am reminded of the Maxine Hong Kingston story of "The No-Name Woman" from her book WOMAN WARRIOR. It's about ghosts and the power of names and hiding by not speaking certain names... If you say the name of a dead person, you risk calling their spirit to you. If they died unhappy, or if their name has been ruined since they died, they can become vengeful, malevolent spirits.
Is this well the home of a drowned spirit---unhappy, alone, waiting for someone to call its name???
